Heather McLeod
Heather McLeod is a recent master's graduate in Fine Arts and ceramics from the Otago Polytechnic School of Design in Dunedin. The exhibition titled "Walking into the Dance" consisted of a group of larger than life interactive female sculptures. Dynamism, body language, the gaze and interaction between the figures played an important past in this ambitious project. Often capturing the form in movement, McLeod's figures are reminiscent of the classic tradition of Greek sculpture. McLeod's sensuous handling of materials, fluidity of line and sensitivity to surface texture are united in her successful series of works entitled "Beginnings". Consisting of nine sculptures, "Beginnings" was exhibited at the Dunedin Community Gallery in December 1998. This series represented the changes and development in the female body during pregnancy. As the pregnancy develops, the body becomes more complete. This exhibition was the outcome of a grant from Creative New Zealand to further professional development and explore the technique of bronze casting McLeod has won several awards including the Compendium Gallery Annual Contemporary Art Exhibition Award (1991) and a merit award in the Suter Art Gallery Awards (1990). She has been exhibiting widely throughout New Zealand since 1985.
