Awarded the 1953 Association of New Zealand Art Societies Scholarships, Roy Cowan attended the prestigious Slade School of Fine Arts in London prior to joining the School Publications branch of the Education Department in 1955. He resigned this position in 1959 to pursue his art career fulltime, and was awarded the Companion of N.Z. Order of Merit for his contribution to the visual arts in New Zealand in 2000. 'Boat and Pot Plant' with its opposites, interior versus exterior and nature versus technology, captures a theme often explored in his work.
