With over 110 pages and 130 colour reproductions, this publication has a strong focus on the figure. In the historical paintings of John McIntosh Madden and William Mathew Hodgkins, images of colonial settlers can be seen within vast and forboding landscapes, while Walter Wright chooses post-colonial Maori as his subjects. The sensuous nude is portrayed in The Vigil of Venus and Study for Composition (Nude) by John Buckland Wright and John Weeks respectively, two of New Zealand's exceptional artists of the modern period. The figure is diversely represented in the contemporary works of this catalogue; from the dark and brooding intensity of White Faced Lady by Tony Fomison, to the vibrant colouration in Pat Hanly's Golden Age Series – Red and Black, and the expressionistic nature of the work of Garth Tapper and Jeffrey Harris.
This publication also features Petrus Van der Velden, Margaret Stoddart, Grace Butler, Sydney Lough Thompson, Ralph Hotere, Nigel Brown and Bill Hammond, Frances Hodgkins, Rita Angus, Ian Scott, and Trevor Moffitt.
