Artist Profile

Herbert Ivan Babbage

Born 1875, Died 1916

Born in Sarnia, South Australia, Herbert Babbage travelled widely in Europe between 1905 and 1909, and then for two years around New Zealand. His paintings cover alpine scenes, markets, parks and gardens and the North Island Central Plateau landscapes.

He had moved to New Zealand with his family when he was only 5 years old, first settling in Hawera, and then Wanganui, for many years on a neighbouring property to Edith Collier at Virginia Lake. He studied at the Wanganui Technical College and worked as a pupil teacher under the painter DE Hutton from 1899 to 1902 when he went to Europe to study at the Julian Academy, Paris. In 1905 he moved to the art colony of St Ives, the treating it alongside Wanganui as his home.

After 7 years away, he returned to New Zealand in 1909, holding solo shows in Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth. He also exhibited with the NZ Academy of Fine Arts from 1909 to 1912.

In 1914, Babbage enlisted for Home Service and was posted to Wales where he continued to sketch and paint between sentry duties. Sadly he became ill and died in Cardiff shortly after his 41st birthday.

Herbert Babbage is recognised in New Zealand by small permanent collections of works held in the Auckland Art Gallery, Alexander Turnbull Library, Sarjeant Gallery Wanganui, Suter Gallery Nelson, Hocken Library Dunedin and Dowse Gallery Lower Hutt.
