Death of a Friend is in a manner reminiscent of the artist Willem de Kooning (1904-97), particularly in his Woman Series phase during the 1950's, where biomorphic forms are seen through the thick paintwork. The powerful expressive quality of this composition, which was painted shortly after the death of Blair's friend and fellow student Philip Clairmont, echoes the emotional poignancy of loss.
