Leonard Long

Born 1911
 

Born in Sydney in 1911, landscape artist Leonard Long was raised in Mittagong NSW, where he developed a love of the Australian bush. He moved to Nowra in 1934 however it was not until he sold his watchmaking company in 1955 that Long became a full-time painter. He travelled extensively throughout Australia painting and sketching the landscape as well as making several trips overseas, including fulfilling the role of judge for the Kelliher Art Award in New Zealand. In 1993 Leonard Long was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to the arts.

Painting predominantly in oils, Leonard Long was known for his depictions of majestic Gums and large gentle rivers, typically in the setting of the lush green bush of NSW. He had a particular interest in the unique crisp effect of light in Australia and New Zealand.
