Clifford Brunsden

Born 1909, Died 1969

Born Timaru, Clifford Aubrey Brunsden studied at the Canterbury College School of Art, the Wellington Technical College School of Art and at Elam School of Fine Art.

In 1936, Brunsden travelled to England where he visited public art galleries, and on his return he won a private bursary enabling him to study art in Australia. When he returned to Timaru in 1955, Brunsden became a member of the committee to establish the Aigantighe Art Gallery.

Brunsden became Aigantighe's first Director when the gallery opened in 1956, a position he retained until his death in September 1969.

During his life, Brunsden painted many scenes of Timaru and South Canterbury that have become records of the changing landscape.
