Artist Profile

David Jones

Born 1929, Died 2007

Born and educated in Auckland, David Jones studied watercolour painting and commercial design at ATI before freelancing in the commercial art field. His later studies in abstract form and design conducted under the tutelage of May Smith and Louise Henderson have undoubtedly influenced his approach to painting.

After shows throughout Australia, London (Sloane Gallery, Chelsea) and the USA, Jones returned to Auckland in late 1980 to become a successful exhibitor in this country. David Jones was the 1988 recipient of the Bledisloe Medal for New Zealand landscape painting.

His current work combines landscape with stylised figure studies using intense colours and strong design.
