Born of New Zealand parents, Matthew was born in London and educated at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts. He gained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Painting before completing Foundation Studies at the same institution and going on to teach at the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Before moving to New Zealand, he was artist's materials consultant and art trade consultant for "The Artist" magazine in London.
Matthew's work was exhibited throughout London between 1985 and 1989; and since living New Zealand, he has tutored in drawing and painting at the Manukau Polytechnic and at Outreach.
During 1993 and 1994 he has exhibited with the Tutor Group Show at the Auckland Society of Arts, Ferner Gallery Auckland and Wellington, The Family in Art exhibition at the Fine Arts Academy in Wellington and the Wallace Art Awards. In 1995 he exhibited in the Royal Overseas League Exhibition, London.
