Starting her career as a portrait photographer Hamilton-born artist Adele Younghusband was a relative latecomer to the art scene.

Beach Houses N. A. depicts a quiet surf beach with a small settlement of holiday houses. This painting bares a close resemblance to the scene depicted in Chases Gorge, Dargaville (1931, Auckland Art Gallery). The earlier painting illustrates the gorge from where the sea meets the river mouth, the view seen here is taken from a high hill-side vantage point on the opposite side of the gorge looking out toward the coast. In Beach Houses the river itself is obscured. The artist lived in Whangarei and Dargaville in the 1920s and was thus familiar with Northland and its beaches.

'N.A.' refers to the location of this scene in a region Younghusband refers to in other painting titles as 'North Auckland'. The exposed rock face of the gorge is reminiscent of her quarry scenes that would become an important theme later in her career.
