Paintings for the Equinox

"The paintings continue my interest in specific places. In this case [at present?] it is Mt Eden. I focus on places which have special relevance in my life and which provide imagery and references that enable the use of the particular landscape to explore the interconnection and interaction of its various elements . These include the human element in terms of how we relate to the place or landscape - how we move within it and perceive it, how we attach myths and stories to it, how we understand its workings and our memories of it. The geological structure of Mt Eden suggests imagery that indicates the underlying volcanic nature of the land, the feminine persona we tend to apply to the land and the stepped poutama image relating to knowledge. There are elements of past and present human interaction with the landscape. The European name for the Mount has connections to age old myths that also involve knowledge as well as concepts of earthly paradise and life and death. The process used is one of building on the black void, making order, and growing the image in a manner that indicates change, development and eventually, decay. The landscape is not seen as a one eyed focused permanent view but a combination of perceptions, ideas and understandings and activity in a constant state of flux." Geoff Tune 2010
