John Coley

Born in 1935 in Palmerston North, John Coley was an apprentice journalist and art critic before training to become a painter.

He studied at Palmerston North Technical College and The Canterbury School of Fine Arts. Inspired by a contemporary exhibition in San Francisco, Coley taught at Christchurch Teachers' College and later became director of the McDougall Art Gallery, (now Christchurch Art gallery), Christchurch until 1995.

He is represented in the collections of Auckland Art Gallery, Aigantighe Gallery, Dunedin Art gallery, Hocken Library, Dowse Museum, Manawatu Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, Rotorua Art Museum, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
