Alpine Cross consists of cast and hand-painted bronze leaves arranged against a white ground, treating the surface of the bronze with patinations that closely imitate those in nature. Thomson has drawn on her childhood recollections of vegetation standing out against the snow of Mount Taranaki to make an image of apparent simplicity. The formal presentation, in contrast with her seemingly casual placement in earlier works, reveals the diversity of her art.
