Thomas Darby Ryan
Thomas Ryan, an accomplished and well-trained artist, settled in New Zealand with his family in 1866. Following formal education at the Church of England Grammar School (now Auckland Grammar) he spent three years at the prestigious Julian Academy in Paris. The famous New Zealand artist Charles Goldie was also a student at the Julian Academy at this time and they became firm friends after their return to New Zealand, frequently going on painting expeditions together especially in the Rotorua and Taupo areas where they made sketches of local Maoris and Maori life. In 1913, Thomas Ryan moved to Taupo. Several public galleries in New Zealand have examples of works by this artist including the Auckland City Art Gallery, the Auckland Museum and the Turnbull Library.
