In 1913, Thomas Ryan moved to Taupo where he lived until 1917 marrying into a local Maori family. At this time he established the first public launch service on Lake Taupo which ran between Taupo harbour, at the mouth of the Waikato River, and Turangi at the southern end of the lake. In the distance the mountains Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe are clearly identifiable.
